Before you continue to read this blog start the video below to listen to the music to set the mood.
At a meditation and Yoga session the other day we discussed the subject of how stress and anxiety comes to us, that we as individuals decide to take it on and so we can also make the decision to let it go. Easier said then done for the many people suffering from stress and anxiety.
I don’t know about you but when anxiety and stress sets in it feels like you are unable to manage things around you. It’s like electrical pulses running through your body and you can’t control them.
They funny thing is that we do need stress to some degree however you need to try and not let it take control of you.
We may talk about cutting the stress from our lives, but we need those precious, powerful fight-or-flight hormones our bodies produce when we’re about to be hit by a car or when confronted with an unexpected, needed-it-yesterday deadline at work.
Stress is a burst of energy, It’s our body telling us what we need to do.
Moderate amounts of stress can help people perform tasks more efficiently and can improve memory. Good stress is the type of emotional challenge where a person feels in control and provides some sense of accomplishment. It can improve heart function and make the body resistant to infection. Far from being something we need to eliminate from our lives, good stress stimulates us.
I currently run a massage therapy business and I feel the stress and tension that individuals carry in their bodies everyday . I myself have suffer from stress and anxiety and have managed to keep it under control. Here are some tips that may help you.
1. Don’t Be Scared To Make a change In Your Life:
If you are unhappy in your job change it. Yes it may scare you at first but there is nothing worse than continuing doing something you just don’t like doing. There are so many opportunities out there especially if you take the time to look. You may even consider to start your own business. Take the time to investigate on the internet and you may surprise yourself.
2. Learn to Breathe Easily
Find a quiet spot in your home to practice breathing deeply. Make yourself comfortable before beginning. Begin by putting your hand on your abdomen just below the navel. Inhale slowly through your nose and watch your hand move out as your belly expands. Hold the breath for a few seconds, then exhale slowly. Focus on the feeling and the sound of your breathing. When your mind wonders focus back on your breathing. After a while you will notice you heart rate lower and you will feel calmer. A great technique to use when you arrive home from work.
3. Visualizing Been Calm
I am an extremely visual person and find this technique to be fantastic. Close your eyes, take three long, slow breaths, and spend a few seconds picturing a relaxing scene, such as walking in a meadow, kneeling by a brook, or lying on the beach. Focus on the details—the sights, the sounds, the smells.
3. Make Time for Massage
The benefits of a massage are amazing. It’s an opportunity to relax the body and mind, it helps with stress and stress related problems and improves your overall feeling of well-being.
4. Write It Down On Paper
This is a great way to put things into perspective. Think in terms of what you can control vs what you can’t. Write these down and focus on what you can change and stop fretting over what you can’t.
5. Just In Time Feedback
Don’t be afraid to speak your mind. It’s ok to show your feelings and Its ok to say no. Don’t be scared to say something to someone if you disagree. Everyone has an opinion and so do you. . Be clear about your limits, and stop trying to please everyone all the time.
6. Use Your Smell
Something I have learn’t through massage is Aromatherapy. Oils of anise, basil, bay, chamomile, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, rose, and thyme are all soothing. Place a few pieces of rock salt in a small vial, then add a couple of drops of the oil of your choice (the rock salt absorbs the oil and is much less risky to carry around in your purse than a bottle of oil). Open the vial and breathe in the scent whenever you need a quick stress release. Look for the oils in your local health food store, or try one of the following mail-order companies.
7. Admit It and Except it
Each of us has uniquely individual stress signals — neck or shoulder pain, shallow breathing, stammering, teeth gritting, queasiness, loss of temper. Learn to identify yours, Recognizing and excepting your personal stress signals helps slow the buildup of negativity and anxiety.
8. Take a Walk
Get out of the office and go for a walk. It forces you to breathe more deeply and improves circulation. The key is to get up and move.
9. Listen To Some Music
Music is so good for the soul. It can do everything from slow heart rate to increase endorphins. Choose music you like and take the time to listen to it.
10. Fall for Puppy
It has been proved that those who own a dog have lower blood pressure than those who don’t. Dogs are such a wonderful animal and extremely loyal. Patting an animal for just a couple of minutes helps relieve stress.
11. Practice Mindfulness
This is a great technique to master. Heighten your awareness by focusing intently on an object. Notice a pen’s shape, color, weight and feel. Or slowly savor a piece of chocolate. Mindfulness leads to relaxation.
